Distinctive in his green jumpsuit, shiny bowl haircut and thick eyebrows, Maito Gai is famous for his “nice guy pose” which consists of giving a thumbs up, winking, and smiling wide exposing his super white teeth that they shine with a proverbial “ping”.
Though both leader and teacher of Team Guy, Gai spends much of his time with his favorite student, Rock Lee who also looks up to Gai as his role model.
Gai’s commitment to Lee stems from Lee’s inability to use ninjutsu or genjutsu, therefore Gai has make it his goal to help his student become a master of taijutsu and dedicate most of his time to teaching Lee all that he knows about taijutsu.
While a fantastic teacher who cares about his students and their feelings, Gai is also very strict about his rules and anyone who breaks them will receive a punishment from him.
Possessing a strong fighting spirit with self-imposed penalties for failure, Gai is a self-proclaimed rival of Kakashi Hatake and is prone to challenging Kakashi to contests of skill though Kakashi is often aloof to Gai’s boastful rantings of his record of 50 wins against Kakashi 49.
A master in taijutsu, Gai specializes in the Strong Fist style of combat and is able to open at least six of the eight Chakra Gates, with each gate giving him more power and speed for short periods of time. Gai has also developed an effective counter against Sharingan users: by focusing on their feet, Gai can both predict the movements of the enemy and negate the hypnotic abilities of the Sharingan that require eye contact.
