Born in the Hidden Sand Village and the youngest son of Fourth Kazekage, Gaara early childhood life is summarized in killing anyone who stands in his way.
As the youngest brother of Temari and Kankurou, Gaara lost his mother during his birth when his father ordered the Shukaku (One-Tailed Jinchuuriki) to be sealed within him sacrificing his mother in the process in the hopes that he would become the ultimate weapon for the village.
Similar to the other Jinchuuriki hosts, Gaara acquired both a physical and special ability of the Shakaku inside him – in his case, dark rings around his eyes resembling those of the Shukaku and the ability to manipulate sand at will.
As Gaara becomes older, his father starts to realize how dangerous Gaara is becoming - who seemingly cannot control the demon within and would accidentally harm others due to the subconscious abilities granted to him by Shukaku.
Concluding Gaara as a failed experiment that a threat to the village, his father ordered several ninjas including Gaara’s caring aunt Yashamaru who was teaching him to love, to assassinate Gaara. Though Gaara survived, the ordeal changed him to become emotionally withdrawn and mentally unstable.
From then on, consumed with hatred for everyone except himself, Gaara used his sand to create the kanji (Love) on his forehead as a symbol of “love no one but myself” and he begins to enjoy killing anyone and all who challenged him.
However after a defeat by Naruto, his ideals of killing changed and decides to acquire strength by helping and caring for people. Over the time skip, Gaara becomes the Kazekage and a lot stronger and is held in high regard by the villagers of the Hidden Sand Village.

With the ability to manipulate sand, Gaara’s favorite form of attack is the Desert Coffin; to capture, immobilize, and potentially suffocate an opponent with sand. While he can control any sand (assuming it isn’t wet), ordinary sand requires that he exert more chakra to manipulate it, tiring him at a rapid rate. Thus, Gaara keeps his own chakra-enhanced sand with him at all times in a calabash gourd he carries on his back, which also happens to be made of sand. Because this sand is already infused with his chakra, Gaara has a great deal more control over it, enabling stronger and faster attacks with it.
